The Salina South girl's basketball team will kick off sub-state play on the road on Tuesday as they travel to Maize South for a third matchup against the Lady Mavericks.

The Lady Cougars will come into this contest as the 11-seed at 8-12 while the Lady Mavs enter as the 6-seed at 15-5.

Maize South swept the regular season series against the Cougars, with wins of 36-24 in late January, and 62-33 just a month later.

Despite holding two losses at the hands of the Mavericks, South knows it's difficult for anyone to beat a team three times, and will look to implement the lessons they've learned from these first two games in the all-inclusive finale.

"We have a lot of familiarity with Maize South and their players after seeing them twice this season," Lady Cougar head coach Justin Ebert said. "We need to do a much better job handling their length and taking advantage of scoring opportunities when they arise. Our girls understand the challenge in front of them and hopefully, we will be up for it."

With just four teams in each sub-state bracket, this will be one of two semifinal matchups held on Tuesday, with the winner advancing to face either 16-3 Emporia or 7-13 Newton on Friday for a ticket to this year's 5A state tournament.

Tip-off between the Lady Cougars and Mavericks is scheduled for 7:00 at Maize South High School.
