CONCORDIA - The scoreboard was lit up by the Cloud County Community College women's basketball team as the T-Birds would total 114 points in 40 minutes of action to take a 114-36 victory over the York College JV team inside Arley Bryant Gymnasium on Thursday.
The win allows CCCC to move to 2-2 overall on the year while the Panther JV team is now 1-2 overall after playing their second game in two days.
A strong opening quarter by the T-Birds would see Cloud County turn a 4-3 lead in the opening 67 seconds into a 13-3 lead midway through the quarter after taking advantage of numerous turnovers by York JV. The run by CCCC would continue on a Te Araroa Sopoaga steal and layup to make it 15-3 as the score would reach a 28-3 margin with 16 seconds left in the quarter on a Shakira Smith steal and layup before seeing the Panthers get a jumper right before time expired to make it 28-5 at the end of the quarter.
Scoring seven of the first nine points of the second quarter, Cloud County would quickly add to their lead to push things to nearly a 30-point margin with still nine minutes left in the first half before getting up over 30 at the 6:52 mark of the quarter with a pair of Rori Cox free throws. CCCC would eclipse the 50-point mark with just over four minutes remaining in the period on their way to going up by a 41-point margin on a Carolynn Washington layup while managing to make it a 58-14 contest at intermission on 24 made field goals.
Not much would change in the third quarter as the T-Birds would continue to put together an offensive onslaught against York JV with the lead threatening to hit 70 points throughout the third quarter. The big lead would allow Cloud County to substitute players at will and mix lineups together to get meaningful minutes to bench players as things would sit at an 87-23 mark heading to the fourth.
Putting up 85 total shots in the contest, Cloud County would sing 45 of them for a 56.5 percent shooting performance from the floor while connecting on 12-of-18 (66.7 percent) of their free-throw attempts. Holding a 38-30 advantage in rebounds, the T-Birds would use 62 points off turnovers and 22 second-chance points to create the 78-point final margin of victory. Eight straight points from freshman Kardae Gales midway through the fourth would allow CCCC to eclipse the 100-point mark to take a 100-27 lead with 6:07 left in the game as the T-Birds would be in full control. Down the stretch, York JV would manage to score nine points and eclipse the 30-point mark as the final quarter would be the only period for the Panthers to score more than nine points while allowing another 14 to Cloud County.
Three of the five starters for CCCC along with three bench players would all reach double-figures in the game led by a game-high and career-high 23 points from Olivia Collier-Tuipulotu. Kay Hauata Phillips would add a double-double off the bench with 16 points and 11 rebounds which included six offensive rebounds as the T-Birds would have a total of 12 players wind up in the scoring column.
