Three second half goals would send the Kansas Wesleyan women's soccer team to a 3-0 win over the Southwestern Moundbuilders in a key Kansas Conference match on Friday evening at the Graves Family Sports Complex.
Wesleyan's staunch defense also stepped up big in the match, limiting Southwestern to just three shots. The 'Builders average nearly 15 shots per game. KWU's three goals are the second highest total allowed by Southwestern this season, who allowed five to Oklahoma Wesleyan earlier this season.
The Coyotes also snapped Southwestern's seven match winning streak, while making it two straight wins for the Coyotes, who have also won three of the last four.
Lissette Garcia (JR/Bakersfield, Calif.) scored the first goal for the Coyotes in the 65th minute. After a corner kick, the ball was loose in the box, and Garcia found it and headed it in from eight yards out.
Crystal Marquez (JR/Lynwood, Calif.) scored next for the Coyotes in the 66th minute. Kayla Deaver (JR/Lee's Summit, Mo.) was fouled inside the penalty area, and Marquez was chosen to take the penalty, and would convert putting Wesleyan up 2-0 quickly.
Garcia came through again in the 81st minute. Deaver took an initial shot which was saved by Southwestern's Ashley Soderlund, but the ball would bounce right to Garcia who quickly shot and converted her second of the match, putting KWU up 3-0.
KWU outshot Southwestern 21-3 in the match. Marquez led the way with six, and Deaver had four. Daisy Bingham (JR/Huntington Beach, Calif.) recorded the clean sheet for the Coyotes in goal, only recording one save.
Wesleyan is back in action on Wednesday, hosting No. 18 ranked Baker at 6 p.m. at the Graves Family Sports Complex, before closing out the regular season next Saturday at Sterling.
