A 1982 Chevrolet El Camino was destroyed after it caught fire early Friday afternoon northeast of Salina.
Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that Michael Monroe, 64, was tuning up the El Camino in the 1600 block of East Stimmel Road when the fire started. Soldan explained that the electric fuel pump kept pumping fuel when vehicle backfired, causing the fire.
Monroe and a friend were able to push the vehicle from the garage before much fire damage was done to the garage, Soldan said. The El Camino, however, was a total loss, he said.
Total damage to the garage and the vehicle was estimated at $15,000, Soldan said.
