WICHITA - A second-straight weekend down in Wichita would prove to be even more successful than last weekend's victory at the 2022 Friends University Open for the Cloud County Community College women's track and field team as the Thunderbird women would post three school records and seven new national qualifying performances at the 2022 KT Woodman Classic held at Cessna Stadium.
With action getting underway on Friday evening, the T-Bird women would not wait long to put together national qualifying performances as both Ludjenie Mondesir (4:55.95) and Melody Ochana (4:57.09) would run qualifying times in the 1,500 meters. Adding to a successful opening night would be Lucy Ndungu in her first time running the 10,000 meters on her way to a school-record performance time of 37:29.44 for a sixth-place finish to cap off the night.
Saturday would see national qualifying marks in both field events and running events as freshman Maggie Armstrong would clear 3.22 meters in the pole vault to punch her ticket to the 2022 National Championship meet. Breaking a school record for a third-straight weekend in the 100-meter hurdles would be Miracle Thompson by winning the event in a time of 13.60 seconds. Also setting a school record on the track would be freshman Vimbayi Maisvorewa in the 400 meters by running a time of 53.68 seconds to finish second among a 46-runner field in the event to tie the current NJCAA fastest time in 2022.
CCCC would also get a trio of National Qualifying Performances in the 100-meter dash as Leonie Beu (11.89), Isila Apkup (11.95), and Thompson (12.03) would all finish under the minimum time of 12.04 seconds for qualifying purposes. The final National Qualifying Mark would come from Sicely Jackson in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:06.58 to become the 13th person in the NJCAA this season to qualify in the event. Other top times and marks for the T-Birds on Saturday would include a third-place finish from Faithlyn Irving in the triple jump (11.96 meters, 39 ft. - 3 in.) to go along with a third-place finish from the 4x400 meter relay team with a time of 3:45.74. Cloud County would also see their 4x100 meter relay team come home with a top-five finish by running a time of 44.97 seconds which currently leads all NJCAA schools.
What's next?
For the first time in the 2022 outdoor season, Cloud County is slated to leave the Sunflower State for competition as the T-Birds will head to Norman, Oklahoma to take part in the University of Oklahoma Sooner Invitational and Multi-Events. Action will begin on Friday.
