Virgil E. "Pete" Oborg, 87, of Overland Park and formerly of Smolan, passed away Monday, March 30, 2020. He was born October 20, 1932 in Smolan to Phillip and Mabel (Anderson) Oborg.
Pete was baptized and confirmed at Salemsborg Lutheran Church, Smolan, and later in life served on the church board. He was a graduate of Smolan High School. Pete was a U.S. Army veteran, serving as a Sergeant during the Korean War. He was a lifelong farmer, dairyman, and stockman, and served on the Board of Farmers Union Coop. He served on the first Smolan city council after it was incorporated in 1962. After retiring from farming, Pete and Norma moved to Salina where they resided until moving to Overland Park in 2018.
He is survived by: his wife, Norma (Weddle) Oborg; daughters, Marty Whitaker (Scott) of Carrollton, Texas, and Shelley Lierz (Steve) of Overland Park, Kan.; sister, Delores Anderson (Eyler) of Salina; and grandchildren, Britta and McKenna Whitaker and Brady and Sydney Lierz.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; brother, Wayne Oborg; and sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Guy Cypher.
Graveside memorial services will be Saturday, July 25, 2020, at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 25, at Salemsborg Lutheran Church Cemetery, 3831 W Salemsborg Rd, Smolan, Kan., 67456. Masks will be required.
