Dr. Milo “Mike” Goss Sloo, III, 81, of Salina, passed away Tuesday, June 6, 2023 at Presbyterian Manor with his loving wife Carol Ann by his side.

Mike was born July 31, 1941 in Topeka, KS to Milo G. Sloo, Jr. and Betty Margaret (Adams) Sloo. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1959 and received a BA from the University of Kansas in 1963. He went on to pursue a career in medicine, graduating from the University of Kansas Medical school in 1967, interned at St. Luke’s Hospital, Kansas City, MO 1967-68, and completed residency at Dickson-Diveley Clinic, Kansas City, MO 1968-72 (St. Luke’s Hospital, Children’s Mercy Hospital, General Hospital, V.A. Hospital). He received his Orthopaedic Surgery Board Certification in 1973, and served as a Major in the U.S. Army Medical Corps until 1974.

Mike was an orthopaedic surgeon in Salina for 33 years, and performed more than 17,000 major surgeries since the start of practice in 1974. During his career, he served as Asbury Chief of Staff, managing partner of Orthopaedic Clinic of Salina, President of Salina Surgical hospital, President of SSH Real Estate, Rotarian and recognized Paul Harris fellow, Board member of Bank VI, President of Salina Imaging Center, and Kansas State Board member of Healing Arts. He was also part of many professional organizations including the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation, Kansas Medical Society, Kansas Orthopaedic Society, Saline County Medical Society, American Medical Association, and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Outside of his professional life, Mike loved to travel with Carol Ann, spend time with his grandkids, visit an occasional car show, and meet weekly with friends in a retired doctors coffee group he started back in 2007. Mike was a philanthropist at heart and supported many charitable organizations. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and served as a board member of the church’s Foundation, Greater Salina Community Foundation, Salina Presbyterian Manor’s board, and focused on education efforts through the KU endowment Chancellor’s Club and Williams Education Fund. He invested time, energy, and financial backing to KU School of Medicine-Salina since its opening in 2011 and passionately said, “I feel that I should be a good steward of the things God has given me in life. What better way than to help train brilliant, young minds to be physicians?”

Mike will be remembered as kind, compassionate, generous, intelligent, quick witted, and a lifelong learner. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Ann; children, Mark Sloo (Mindy), Suzanne Sloo, Laurie Constable Orosco (Cesar); sister, Martha Kruckemyer (Dr. Alan); brother-in-law, David Claus (Becky); grandchildren, Myranda Sloo, Ayva Sloo, Keefe Bateman, Nicholas Orosco, Matthew Orosco; and nephews/niece, David Kruckemyer, Brian Kruckemyer, Lisa Claus.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to: Immanuel Lutheran Church, KU School of Medicine-Salina, and Hospice of Salina, in care of Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth Street, Salina, KS 67401.

A memorial service and reception celebrating the life of Dr. Mike Sloo is scheduled at 11:00 am, Saturday, July 29, 2023 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 225 S. Seventh St, Salina, KS.
