The Kansas Wesleyan Flag Football team left little doubt who the victor was going to be in Wednesday night's Kansas Conference match-up with the Southwestern College Moundbuilders.

The Coyotes jumped out to a 38-0 lead with 407 yards of total offense and limited Southwestern to only 235 yards of offense in the 38-12 decision at JRI Hospitality Stadium at the Graves Family Sports Complex.

Most of Southwestern's offense came on just three drives (168 of 235 yards), all of which were aided by chunk-yardage plays. The other eight drives by the Moundbuilders were 20 yards or less each.

Meanwhile, Wesleyan's offense was rolling. The Coyotes averaged 9.9 yards per play on 55 plays in the game, which included 344 through the air and 63 on the ground.

KWU got the ball first and immediately capitalized. The Coyotes marched down the field and Chihiro Iwata capped the drive with a 20-yard pass to Ciaran DeCuir and the PAT1 was good putting the Coyotes up 7-0 with 8:24 left in the first.

Southwestern's first drive did not pass its own 30 yard line as the Coyotes were back in business, driving to the Southwestern 30, but could not push it in.

KWU's defense stepped up in its next opportunity, as Angel Roman stepped in front of Kennedi Hayes' pass at the SWC 35 and returned it 14 yards setting up Wesleyan's next score.

Iwata found Soriah Tafua for a 6-yard touchdown at nearly the same spot she made an incredible diving grab for a score on Sunday against William Woods to put the Coyotes up 13-0 with 1:09 left in the first.

The next Southwestern drive stalled in the Moundbuilders' own territory again and after the punt, Iwata found Roman for a 28-yard passing play, and later in the drive Wood hauled in a leaping catch for 23 yards to convert a fourth down, and on the next play Ava Duerr caught a 6-yard pass for the score making it 19-0 with 7:04 left in the half.

Wesleyan's defense pinned Southwestern deep in its own territory on the next drive as SWC went three and out not getting to the 20, and the Coyotes took over inside Moundbuilder territory after a solid punt return by Nyjah Green.

The Coyotes were on the board again on the next drive as Iwata hit Roman for a 15-yard touchdown pass to make it 25-0 with 1:49 left in the half.

Southwestern drove to the KWU 2 on its next drive, but Lexi Marquez knocked away a pass on fourth down to keep the Moundbuilders out of the endzone.

KWU made one last effort to put points on the board in the first half, taking over with 10 seconds left, and Iwata hit Wood for a 36-yard pass play, and Iwata nearly connected with Addison Cadwell wide open down the sideline, but just missed as time expired in the half.

Wesleyan's first drive of the second half yielded points yet again as Iwata hit Jazmine Whitfield for a 5-yard score.

Southwestern's next drive went backwards as the Moundbuilders lost four yards on the drive and the Coyotes had a semi-short field to drive for their final points of the game.

A pass to Whitfield got the drive going, but Green would finish the drive off, first with a 4-yard run to convert a third down, and then sped through the defense untouched for a 17-yard run to make it 38-0 with 1:17 to go in the third.

Southwestern used a big play on its next drive, a 61-yard pass from Hays to Mary Jones, and after a stalled KWU drive scored again on a 24-yard pass from Hayes to Olivia Manfre.

On its final drive Southwestern had a chance to score taking over at the KWU 33 with 49 seconds left, but the Coyotes said no, turning the Moundbuilders over on downs with seven seconds left.

Iwata was again phenomenal for the Coyotes going 27 of 35 passing for 299 yards and five touchdowns despite not playing in the fourth quarter. Emilee Buhl was 8 of 11 for 45 yards.

Roman had seven catches for 87 yards and a score to lead the Coyote receivers. Wood had five grabs for 75 yards, Tafua had four for 28, Whitfield had four for 40. KWU had 11 different players make at least one reception.

Alexa Mansur led the KWU defense with seven flag pulls and two pass breakups, while Ansdiane Rabano had five, including a sack.
