Police are investigating an aggravated assault and damage to property case in northwest Salina late Thursday afternoon.

Walter Bell, 40, of Salina, told police that he was at StuJo's Carwash, 120 North Broadway Boulevard, at approximately 5:15 p.m. Thursday detailing his vehicle when a black Chevrolet Suburban pulled in and two men approached him, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. Bell described the men as six-foot tall and heavy set and either white or Hispanic, Forrester said. One of the men had short hair and the other had longer hair, he added. Bell said the shorter-haired man was holding a gray and black handgun when he got out of the Suburban, Forrester said.

Bell told police that the men asked him whether he was Walter Bell and he told them "no," Forrester said.

A physical altercation then broke out, he said. At some point during the altercation, Bell broke free and took off running, Forrester explained. As he was running around the west side of the carwash, Bell heard two gunshots, Forrester said. The Suburban then left southbound down the alley behind the carwash, he added.

According to Forrester, the glass on Bell's silver Breitling watch was broken. The watch was valued at $2,000, he said.

Police found two 9mm shell casings at the carwash, Forrester said.
