HUTCHINSON -- The Kansas State Fair Grand Drive Committee is again going beyond just selecting champion animals.

For the second year in a row, the Fair will award 10 separate $1,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors and secondary education students who have been part of the Fair's Grand Drive Youth Livestock Show.

The application deadline is April 15.

Winners will be announced during the Grand Drive, which will take place the first weekend of the Fair, Sept. 11-13.

Applicants will be required to submit their high school and post-secondary transcripts. They must also write an essay of 500 words or less describing both their experiences showing livestock at the Grand Drive and what resonated the most, as well as about their leadership and career goals for the future and how the Grand Drive influenced these goals. The applicant must also provide two letters of recommendation.

Applications can be found on the Kansas State Fair website – bit.ly/GDScholarship2020.

Since its start in 2000, the Kansas State Fair Grand Drive has turned into the state’s premier livestock competition. The event encompasses shows for cattle, sheep, hogs and goats. In 2019, Kansas youth entered nearly 2,500 animals.

The Fair is able to have the Grand Drive thanks to a great partnership with Midwest Ford, along with many other sponsors. For more information about the Grand Drive or the scholarship, contact Competitive Exhibits Director Jenn Galloway at [email protected].
