A known suspect was apprehended Thursday after he returned to the scene of a crime in far northeast Saline County.
According to Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan, deputies were dispatched to the 9900 block of East Riordan Road at 5:48 a.m. for the report of two masked subjects who had broken into a residence. He said that a 19-year-old man and his 18-year-old girlfriend were awakened by a noise, and found two male subjects wearing ski masks in the residence. One of the subjects was carrying a Highpoint 495 40 caliber rifle, he added.
The man's 83-year-old grandmother also was in the residence at the time, Soldan said.
The 19-year-old confronted the two subjects and got into an altercation with the rifle-toting subject, Soldan explained. During the altercation, the 19-year-old was able to take the rifle from the suspect, he said. He also pulled the mask from the suspect's face and recognized him as an acquaintance, Soldan said. The 19-year-old also grabbed his own Ruger SR22 rifle with a scope -- valued at $1,000 -- which the suspect then took from him, Soldan said.
During the altercation, the two crashed through a glass door and the 19-year old was cut, Soldan said. The known suspect fled the scene, he said. By then the other suspect had also fled the scene, Soldan added.
Prior to waking up the residents, the two suspects had placed a 20-inch Apple computer (valued at $700, a 43-inch Vizio television (valued at $400, and a black nylon purse outside the residence, Soldan said.
As sheriff's office investigators went to the house shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday to interview the victims, they were made aware by surveillance that the known suspect, Dvonte Johnson, 19, of New Cambria, was back in the area of the residence, Soldan said. They located Johnson and the victim's rifle nearby in a black Nissan Altima, Soldan explained.
Johnson was arrested on suspicion of the following, Soldan said.
Aggravated burglary
Aggravated robbery
Theft
Battery
The second suspect remains at large and the investigation continues, Soldan said.
