National history was made in Salina today and a first for female wrestlers around the nation. The Tony's Pizza Event Center held the first ever sanctioned state championship wrestling tournament for girls.
The 2019-2020 wrestling season started with 972 wrestlers around the state in all classes participating in the first season sanctioned by the Kansas State High School Activities Association. Today's tournament featured the best of the best with 131 participants.
"We are thrilled that the Kansas State High School Activities Association chose to host this historic event in Salina", said Marjie Anderson, Marketing Director for TPEC. "These ladies have worked hard for the honor of representing their schools, and to have girls' wrestling recognized as a sanctioned sport in Kansas. Their achievements will inspire many more young girls to get involved and help grow the sport."
The Girls State Tournament kicked off a weekend full of wrestling at Tony's Pizza Events Center with the KSHSAA Class 4A State Championship on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday the venue will host the Kansas Ages 6 and Under State Tournament.
