Two people and a dog got out safely from a fire that destroyed two trailer homes in a west Salina trailer park Tuesday afternoon.

Salina Fire Investigator Joe Kvacik said Wednesday that the fire was first reported at 2:10 p.m. Tuesday. When firefighters arrived, two trailer homes at the far north end of the trailer park at 1200 West Crawford Street were on fire, he said. It appeared that the heat from the first burning trailer home set the second one ablaze, Kvacik said. Both trailer homes, which were owned by Dorthea Pace, were destroyed, he said.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined and remains under investigation, Kvacik said.

According to Kvacik, firefighters did a good job with a not-so-good situation. He explained that firefighters had to bring water to the empty lot off of South Broadway Boulevard that was next to the fire because the closest fire hydrant was on West Crawford Street. Additionally, firefighters had to deal with bystanders who were in the way before fire equipment could be set up, he said.

"The guys did a good job overcoming a bad situation," Kvacik said.
