CONCORDIA -- Cloud County Community College’s theatre department has announced auditions for its spring musical.
Auditions for “The Secret Garden” are scheduled for 6 p.m. on Feb. 11 in Cook Theatre on the Concordia campus.
The play, based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, is set in the early 1900s. Mary Lennox, a young English girl born in India, is orphaned by a cholera outbreak when she is 10 years old. She is sent to live with her uncle, a hermit, in England. Her own personality blossoms as she and a young gardener bring new life to a neglected garden, as well as her sickly cousin and uncle.
Available roles, ages and vocal ranges are:
Youth
Mary Lennox, 10 years old; Colin Craven, 10 years old; Dickon, 12-15 years old, tenor; and Martha, 15-18 years old, mezzo soprano.
Adults
Mrs. Medlock; Archibald Craven, baritone; Dr. Craven, baritone; Ben; and Lily, soprano.
Roles of the Dreamers are: Rose, soprano; Albert, tenor; Lieutenants Wright and Shaw; Majors Shelley and Holmes; Mrs. Shelley and Holmes; Fakir, tenor; Ayah; and children.
Those who audition will need to prepare 16 bars to sing a cappella.
Rehearsals for “The Secret Garden” will be Feb. 18-April 30. Violette Kjeldgaard, CCCC theatre instructor, will be directing.
The musical will be performed May 1-3 at the Brown Grand Theatre in downtown Concordia.
