T-bird wrestlers compete at Newman University

WICHITA – Three wrestlers would represent the Cloud County wrestling team on Sunday, at the Newman University RWC-Jet Invite in Wichita, Kansas on Sunday.

Freshmen Aiden ConnorsChandler Schoenberger, and Dante Harper would all take to the mat for the T-Birds, accounting for seven total wins and a fourth-place finish for Harper in the 174-pound weight division.

At 133 pounds, Connors would drop his opening match of the day to Jack Karstetter of Labette Community College but bounce back to earn a fall over Kardan Lee of Labette and 8-7 decision over Nick Coria of York College. Just one match from wrestling for third, Connors would see his day end with a second loss to Karstetter in the consolation semifinals.

Schoenberger would represent Cloud County in the 141-pound weight division, picking up a victory in his first match of the day with a 3-2 decision over Alex Thyes of Ouachita Baptist. In the quarterfinal round, Schoenberger would be handed a loss by Von Gray of Central Oklahoma before eventually bowing out of the tournament with a defeat to Naseer Willis of Schreiner University.

Harper would finish the day with a 4-2 overall record in six total matches, with each of his two losses coming to NCAA Division II opponents. The morning would start with a fall in 2:00 over Cameron Pelkey of Schreiner University before seeing Martin Verhaeghe of Fort Hays State send him to the consolation rounds with his first loss of the day. Wins by fall over Noah Guerra of Schreiner (2:19) and Cody Pederson of York College (2:55) would put Harper in the consolation semifinal round where he would earn a 7-6 decision over Lennorise Echols. Harper's sixth and final match saw the freshman fall to JD Johnson of host Newman University, settling for fourth.

What's next?

Cloud County will be back in action on Wednesday to resume Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference dual action with a 7 p.m. dual at Colby Community College. It will be the second time this season that Cloud County and Colby have met on the mat, with the Trojans earning a non-conference win over the T-Birds at the NJCAA Coaches Duals earlier this month.
