The Salina Symphony will present an eclectic mix of classical music and jazz during its upcoming concert.
The concert is scheduled for 4 p.m. Feb. 9 in the Stiefel Theatre for the Performing Arts, 151 South Santa Fe Avenue.
Guest artist Nick Schroeder will join the Symphony as guest artist for Buddy Clementsâ âConcerto for Jazz Trumpet and Orchestra.â According to the composer, this work âwas intended for the very small group of trumpet soloists who have the âchopsâ to pull it off!â
The three movements of the concerto take both the soloist and the orchestra through a variety of jazz and popular musical styles.
The concert will also feature Haydnâs âSymphony No. 45 in F-sharp minor,â commonly referred to as the âFarewellâ Symphony.
Dr. David Littrell, Symphony interim music director and conductor, sums up the piece with this question and answer: âHow do you tell a prince that itâs time for the musicians to leave the palace for the summer and return to their families? You have them walk off the stage in groups until the last two violinists finish the piece and leave.â
The concert will end with âSymphony No. 8 in G Majorâ by Dvorak.
âThis symphony is infused with joy and luscious melodies throughout, as well as being packed with an exciting level of energy,â said Littrell, who jokingly added, âIf you dislike this symphony, you're wrong.â
