The Salina Symphony will present an eclectic mix of classical music and jazz during its upcoming concert.

The concert is scheduled for 4 p.m. Feb. 9 in the Stiefel Theatre for the Performing Arts, 151 South Santa Fe Avenue.

Guest artist Nick Schroeder will join the Symphony as guest artist for Buddy Clements’ “Concerto for Jazz Trumpet and Orchestra.” According to the composer, this work “was intended for the very small group of trumpet soloists who have the ‘chops’ to pull it off!”

The three movements of the concerto take both the soloist and the orchestra through a variety of jazz and popular musical styles.

The concert will also feature Haydn’s “Symphony No. 45 in F-sharp minor,” commonly referred to as the “Farewell” Symphony.

Dr. David Littrell, Symphony interim music director and conductor, sums up the piece with this question and answer: “How do you tell a prince that it’s time for the musicians to leave the palace for the summer and return to their families? You have them walk off the stage in groups until the last two violinists finish the piece and leave.”

The concert will end with “Symphony No. 8 in G Major” by Dvorak.

“This symphony is infused with joy and luscious melodies throughout, as well as being packed with an exciting level of energy,” said Littrell, who jokingly added, “If you dislike this symphony, you're wrong.”

Tickets are on sale now and may be purchased at the Stiefel Theatre Box Office, by calling 785-827-1998 or online at salinasymphony.org. Single admission is $29/$39 and $20 for students/children ages 5 and up.
