Two people were taken to the hospital and two people were cited as the result of a motorcycle-SUV accident on New Year's Day in central Salina.

The accident occurred at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday in the 200 block of East Crawford Street, Salina Police Captain Bill Cox said today.

Trisha Crumpton, 37, of Salina, was driving a 2017 Honda CR-V eastbound on East Crawford Street when she noticed several motorcycles coming up on her from behind, Cox said. Crumpton told police that she got scared and stopped in the driving lane, Cox said.

Richard Zimmerman, 43, of Salina was driving a 2007 Harley-Davidson motorcycle eastbound on Crawford, according to Cox. When Crumpton stopped, Zimmerman attempted to slow down and swerve into the other lane, but the motorcycle's brakes locked up and the motorcycle skidded into the back of the SUV, Cox said.

Zimmerman received a broken leg and lacerations to his forehead, Cox said. A passenger on the motorcycle, Heather Wachs, 32, of Salina, also received lacerations to her forehead, he said. Both were transported to Salina Regional Health Center, he added.

Cox said that Zimmerman was cited for reckless driving and Crumpton was cited for stopping in the roadway.
