A woman is dead after an early Friday morning fire in north Salina.
Fire Investigator Joe Kvacik told Salina Post that two crews from Fire Station No. 1 on West Elm Street were sent to a mobile home fire in the 900 block of North 13th at 2:51 a.m. Friday. When crews arrived, nearly three-fourths of the mobile home was fully engulfed in flames, he said.
Crews were able to extract a man and a woman from the mobile home and knock down the fire within four minutes of arriving on the scene, Kvacik said.
The woman died at the scene and the man was transported to Salina Regional Health Center and later transfered to a burn unit in Wichita, he said. The man had burns over 18 percent of his body, Kvacik said.
Names of the man and woman are being withheld pending notification of next of kin, Kvacik added.
Kvacik said an investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing. He explained that investigators need to talk with the man once his condition is such that he can speak with them.
Kvacik said it is important that people have working smoke alarms in their homes. There were no smoke alarms found in the mobile home, he said.
"Early notification can save lives," he said.
Kvacik praised the fire crews for their work to get the people out and the fire knocked down within four minutes, noting the difficult conditions they faced in the trailer park and with most of the mobile home being engulfed in flames when they arrived.
