Michael J. “Mike” Oakes Sr., 74, passed away Sunday, Dec. 1, 2019 at Legacy of Salina. He was born June 21, 1945, in Springfield, Mass., to Charles and Corrine Oakes. He married Betty Oakes, Nov. 19, 1988, at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Salina.
Mike graduated from Technical High School in Springfield, Mass. He worked for 15 years in Longmeadow, Mass. as an auto mechanic. After moving to Salina in 1980, he worked as a machinist for Exline for 28 years and A and B Machine until retirement. Mike’s passion was golfing.
He is survived by: stepdaughters, Kathy Hartley and Kelly Roberts (Rick); stepson, Joe Hartley (Anita); son, Michael Oakes Jr. (Eva); daughter, Cheryl Gilmour; brother, Charles Oakes; 20 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by: his parents; wife, Betty Oakes; sister, Joanne Poirier; and son, Charles P. Oakes.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, at Ryan Mortuary. The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. for one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Salina.
