📹Big Boy to stop in Abilene, Salina, Ellsworth this week

Don't forget: Union Pacific’s historic Big Boy has returned to the rails and is scheduled to be in our area this week.


Salina Post first brought you the news on Sept. 27 that the Big Boy steam locomotive No. 4014 is touring the Union Pacific (UP) system throughout 2019 to commemorate the transcontinental railroad’s 150th anniversary, according to the UP website.


Following are the most current times and dates that Big Boy will be in our area.


Abilene (201 NW 2nd St.)

Arrival 12:15 p.m. Wednesday

Departure 12:35 p.m. Wednesday


Salina (400 N. 13th St.)

Arrival 2:15 p.m. Wednesday

Departure 8 a.m. Thursday


Ellsworth (Lincoln Avenue crossing)

Arrival 9:30 a.m. Thursday

Departure 10:15 a.m. Thursday



The Big Boy’s return to the rails is the product of more than two years of meticulous restoration work by the Union Pacific Steam Team. No. 4014 is the world’s only operating Big Boy locomotive, the UP website noted.
