Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid Quotes

September 21, 2026

OPENING STATEMENT: “Okay, there's nothing new on the injury front. I don't have anything new for you on (T) Josh (Simmons). I don't have anything new on (DB Chamarri) Conner. So, we just will hit all that as the day goes on here, next couple days go on. I thought overall the guys played a good game and really all three phases had their spots. Was great to have (K Harrison) Butker make that last field goal, and he's done that so many times for us. We kind of take it for granted. But not an easy thing to do, and he sure jumped up there and there was a lot of confidence. Then defensively when we needed to bear down there, we took care of business. Then within all of that the four quarters, there were some really good things that took place but still with room for improvement, and I tell you the same thing offensively. There were some really good things that took place, but there's still room to improve and that’ll be a constant throughout the year, I’m sure. We're playing a lot of young players, and we've just got to keep growing and stacking these days, literally in practice, learning in practice and continuing to stack those days throughout the season and get ourselves to where we're playing even better football. A lot of individual accolades, you can go through and you guys know all of those and really nothing has changed since I've seen the tape from last night when I had a chance to talk to you other than we've got plenty of room to improve. So, with that, time's yours.”

Q: From QB Patrick Mahomes's standpoint, he looked a lot more comfortable. What do you think was the biggest point in that happening?

REID: “Yeah, I thought (QB Patrick Mahomes) he did a nice job of getting the ball out on time. He made quite a few line of scrimmage checks and did a nice job. He was accurate with those. Just overall I thought he played he played a good football game, the numbers show that but also the little things that he did in there, I thought we're good, mixing up the snap count and so on.”

Q: What pleased you the most from a non-Mahomes standpoint about what the offense did well?

REID: “Yeah, I like the aggressiveness of the offensive line. It wasn't all perfect, but the guys played hard there. I thought when the receivers were asked to get in there and block, they did that along with the tight ends, and then we did a pretty good job in the pass game of getting guys open. The guys work their tail off to get over. This team plays a lot of man (coverage) and even within their zone (coverage) there's a lot of man. So, to be able to get themselves open takes a big effort by them and that. And our runners – we’ve got two guys that were in there that made positive yards and the part that kind of—(RB) (Kenneth) Kenny (Walker) the part that gets put aside is 60 or whatever yards he had catching the ball, so, he had over a hundred yards running it and then another, I don't know the exact number but 60ish number catching the ball.”

Q: What did you see from T Kahlil Benson in his second game?

REID: “I saw some good things. (T Kahlil Benson) He had a couple of hiccups there mostly just adjusting scheme wise more than the one-on-one blocking part of it, but overall, he did a pretty good job, I thought, so solid.”

Q: Is T Josh Simmons in meetings and around in the building?

REID: “Yeah, (T Josh Simmons) he's doing everything. Yeah, he's working his tail off. We knew it'd be a couple two, three, four games in here as long as he was making progress. So, we'll just see where he's at. He's kind of in that flex area there to see exactly how that thing, if it's calmed down and some of the swelling gone down, but we'll see.”

Q: On WR Tyquan Thornton.

REID: “So, (WR) Tyquan (Thornton) had a real good training camp. You know that, so I think he's just kind of carried that over into this. I would anticipate that he continue to make the same plays or have the same opportunities that he had yesterday, but you never know in these games who's going to have the game and who's not or who had the opportunities and who's not. But he's well-deserving of what he got and then he took advantage of it by making the play and a couple of those are tough catches and did a great job with it. I'm sure he's probably a little sore this morning, Soren (Petro). He took a couple shots in there.”

Q: Will RB Kenneth Walker’s workload change? Will RB Emmett Johnson start getting more carries?

REID: “Well, I think the way I look at it, Soren (Petro), is the people you mentioned, that's part of the equation, but the other part is allowing (RB) Emmett (Johnson) to grow. And so, I think Emmett will continue to get more snaps and then it'll take a little bit of load, off (RB Kenneth) Kenny (Walker), but he wants that ball. He wants a ball every play, Ken does, and he he's not asking to be relieved or anything else. But I think as it goes on, you get a nice balance with those two in there and then it keeps them even more fresh as the season goes on.”

Q: Did you have any consideration to try for the 72-yard field goal at the end of regulation?

REID: “For about a second. That looked long right there where we were at. So, I kind of held back on and figured we get into the overtime part of it there.”

Q: Was there any development with CB Mansoor Delane or change since Friday that kept him out of the game last night?

REID: “Yeah, it wasn't coming around as fast as we wanted. (CB Mansoor Delane) He was right on the border there, Matt (Derrick), of alright, you can get in and play and play a full game or just let's if we can get it to calm down a little bit more and maybe he's better this week, so there's a tweeners position to be in and but he wanted to suit up and if needed he could have gone in but we're trying to keep him out of having to play a full game in there for sure. “

Q: What is enabling TE Travis Kelce to come out of the gates this way this season? What are you seeing from him?

REID: “So, listen, (TE Travis) Trav (Kelce) worked his tail off. That's the bottom line, and I think he probably said it after the game somewhere there that the amount of work he put in. He likes his surrounding cast, that’s around him too, which sure helps as just an extra challenge there to make sure that you're up there and competing and doing your part with that other group. So, he takes a lot of pride in that, but I know he really, everybody questioned with the wedding and all that. Would he be out of shape and honeymooning the whole time and all that, but he works his rear end off and I think Taylor (Swift), you're putting on four-hour shows. You've got to work hard, too. So, I'm sure she kicks him in the butt a little bit there, too.”

Q: Does TE Travis Kelce look different physically this season than the last two?

REID: “Yeah, I think just his body. He's really focused in on his body strength and his glutes and everything where you develop all the power and speed and maintain it and he's done a good job in those areas, where he's been able to maintain good explosiveness.”

Q: What are your thoughts on the goal line execution of your offense so far through two games?

REID: “Yes, we are. I was hoping we'd get it in with one of those runs that we ran down in there. That's a place we've got to fix but we will come through with the pass to (WR Jalen) Royals and worked out okay, but overall, I like the way things have been going there. The run game helps the ability to be able to run it and pound it in there. Definitely gives you a few more options, but that's something you can always improve on. That area, it can go hot and cold in a heartbeat, and you want to make sure that you keep it on the hot side.”

Q: Can you take us through the end of regulation?

REID: “Yeah, I was kind of just seeing—I was going by down in distance there and seeing what the gains were and that's why I held off.”

Q: Are you starting to see more from WR Rashee Rice?
