KANSAS CITY, Mo.— The Kansas City Royals announced today outfielder Jac Caglianone and left-handed pitcher Noah Cameron have been named Royals Player and Pitcher of the Month, respectively, for August. The awards are determined by a local media vote.
Caglianone slashed .411/.429/.684 (39-for-95) with 6 home runs, 26 RBI and a 1.113 OPS in 24 games last month. He led Major League Baseball in August in batting average and OPS, while ranking among the Major League leaders in hits (2nd), slugging percentage (2nd), total bases (T-3rd, 65), RBI (T-4th) and extra-base hits (T-8th, 14). Caglianone became the third player in franchise history to post a batting average of at least .410 with 25 RBI in a single month (min. 90 AB), joining Hall of Famer George Brett (.430, 30 RBI) in August 1980 and Amos Otis (.413, 29 RBI) in September 1978. His 39 hits and 26 RBI in August were the most by a Royal in any month this season. He reached safely in 22 of his 24 games last month, which included a career-best 17-game on-base streak from Aug. 1-19. He hit safely in 21 of his 24 games in August and registered a career-high 13-game hit streak from Aug. 1-15, which was the 3rd-longest run by an American League player last month. Caglianone recorded 2 doubles and 2 home runs on Aug. 8 vs. the Cubs, becoming the first player in Royals history to reach those marks in a single game, while matching the club record for extra-base hits in a game (4). At age 23 years and 180 days, he became the youngest left-handed hitter to record a 2-homer, 2-double effort since Hall of Famer Mel Ott (20 years, 109 days) on June 19, 1929 at Philadelphia (G1). He tallied a career-high 5 hits and 6 RBI on Aug. 27 at Toronto, becoming the third Royal in team history to have at least 5 hits and 6 RBI in a single contest, joining Eric Hosmer (5 hits, 6 RBI) on July 26, 2017 at Detroit and Kevin Seitzer (6 hits, 7 RBI) on Aug. 2, 1987 vs. Boston. This unanimous selection marks his second career monthly honor, following June, when he slashed .309/.387/.649 (29-for-94) with 3 doubles, 1 triple, 9 home runs and 19 RBI in 25 games.
