NORTH NEWTON – The Kansas Wesleyan competitive cheer team competed three times over the weekend at the Bethel College Invitational. KWU performed once on Friday evening and twice on Saturday.
Wesleyan's best finish was in the third and final competition of the event as the Coyotes posted a score of 78.10, which set a new school record for the highest competition routine score in program history.
The Coyotes posted a fourth place finish in the final standings of the third competition, and were the best ranked school from the KCAC in that competition.
KWU also posted a seventh place finish in the second competition, the first on Saturday morning.
On Friday evening, KWU posted a fifth place finish in the opening competition of the Invitational event.
Saint Ambrose won the first competition, with a score of 96.3. The Fighting Bees are ranked first in the NAIA in scoring average. Saint Mary was second with a score of 84.83, followed by Bethel in third with 78.36, Friends was fourth with 78.01, KWU was fifth with 73.66, McPherson was sixth with 70.56, Bethany was seventh with 54.11, Sterling was eighth with 45.76, and York was ninth with 40.0.
Saint Ambrose also won the second competition with a final score of 94.61. Oklahoma City was second with a score of 85.71, Ottawa was third with 80.46, Bethel was fourth with 76.68, Midland was fifth with 76.36, Saint Mary was sixth with 74.15, KWU was seventh with 69.46, Southwestern was eighth with 55.01, Bethany was ninth with 54.08, Baker was 10th with 51.53, Columbia was 11th with 40.05 and Sterling was 12th with 38.0.
Saint Ambrose made it a trifecta, winning the third competition with a 92.7. Midland was second with 91.38, Oklahoma City was third with 90.56, KWU was fourth with 78.10, Bethel was fifth with 74.63, Saint Mary was sixth with 74.08, Southwestern was seventh with 56.06, Baker was eighth with 53.96 and Sterling was ninth with 37.60.
One more weekend of competition awaits the Coyotes ahead of the KCAC Championships. KWU heads to York on Friday and Concordia on Saturday. The KCAC Championships are Feb. 17 at Friends.
