A hearse was stolen from a local mortuary early Sunday afternoon.
Officers were sent to Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth Street, at noon Sunday, for the report of a disorderly subject, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester. When they arrived, officers were told by Ryan's employees that the subject had left in one of the mortuary's Lincoln hearses. The hearse was valued at $80,000.
The hearse was then located parked on the north side of the police department in the driveway of the parking lot on W. Elm Street, Forrester reported.
The suspect was identified as Craig Gilbert, 52, of Salina. According to Forrester, Gilbert was arrested on the following requested charges.
Felony theft
Criminal trespassing
Driving on an expired driver's license
The hearse was not damaged and was returned to the mortuary, Forrester noted.
