Salina man pronounced dead after 'shooting himself' at Salina Regional Health Center

A Salina man was pronounced dead at Salina Regional Health Center after allegedly 'shooting himself.'

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) this morning (Thursday, June 26th), officers responded to the Salina Regional Health Center Emergency Room regarding a male that shot himself. It was reported that an 87-year old Salina man walked into the ER and made 'contact with ER personnel.'

Police stated that once the man checked in, he 'produced a handgun and shot himself while in the waiting room.' 

There were no reports of anyone who was present in the waiting room or anyone getting hurt.

According to SPD immediate life-saving measures were performed, but the man was pronounced deceased just after 8:00 am this morning.

The investigation is ongoing.

The following is a statement from the Salina Regional Health Center's Facebook page:

At approximately 7:08 a.m. on Thursday, June 26, Salina Regional Health Center activated its active shooter protocol in response to an incident in the emergency room.

No patients or staff were harmed during this incident.

The Emergency Room is still accepting patients, however, they will be rerouted to another area of the hospital. The hospital is cooperating with law enforcement in this ongoing investigation.

As always, the safety and well-being of our patients, staff and visitors remain our highest priority.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy,” said Joel Phelps, President and CEO. “Our thoughts are with all those affected and we are committed to supporting our staff and patients during this time. We are thankful that the SRHC team and patients were unharmed.”
