After both area 8-man teams were eliminated on Thursday, just seven area schools remained heading into the final day of the opening round of the 2021 playoffs.

Of those seven schools, four will be moving on to round two while three saw their seasons come to an unfortunate end.

Here is a brief look at each school's fate after a busy Friday of playoff football.

Salina Central 42, Liberal 10

The Central Mustangs went from 1-8 to playoff winners in the matter of just a year, beginning their postseason run with a statement win over 4-5 Liberal.

Quarterback Parker Kavanagh racked up three touchdowns including two on the ground, but the most explosive play of the day came on a 100-yard pick-six by Avery Richardson.

The Mustangs will have a chance to avenge a playoff loss to Wichita Northwest from last season when they travel to take on the Grizzlies in the Round of 16 next week.

Salina South 21, Andover 51

The South Cougars battled hard but key injuries proved to be too much to overcome as the team fell at the hands of the Andover Trojans.

The Cougars trailed by just three at the end of the first quarter but a blocked punt by Max Middleton was returned 65 yards the other way to extend the Andover lead and the Trojans never looked back, pulling away before the half.

South will wrap up their season 1-8 while Andover advances to play the Hays Indians next week.

Abilene 12, Buhler 52

The Abilene Cowboys were unable to overcome injuries and long odds as the team fell to the Crusaders 52-12 on Friday night.

Abilene ends their season at 0-9 while Buhler advances to take on 4-5 Winfield.

Chapman 50, Smoky Valley 20

The Chapman Fighting Irish opened up their playoff run with a dominant victory, handing Smoky Valley a 50-20 loss on Friday.

Chapman once again ran the ball at will thanks to another big night from Eli Riegel, who has over 1,500 total yards this season.

The Irish will travel to Gypsum next week to take on the undefeated Southeast of Saline Trojans in what should be a great battle of area schools.

Southeast of Saline 60, Marysville 7

The SES undefeated tour rolled on Friday night as the Trojans cruised past Marysville opening their 2021 playoff run with a bang.

The Southeast defense looked dominant once again, holding the Bulldogs to negative yardage on the ground while the offense built a 48-7 lead to take into halftime.

The Trojans will host 7-2 Chapman next week with both teams looking to punch their ticket to the 3A quarterfinals.

Ell-Saline 48, Stanton County 0

The Ell-Saline Cardinals put any doubts about their validity to bed in their playoff opener, stomping the Stanton County Trojans 48-0.

The Cardinals did most of their damage on the ground, rushing for 242 yards and six touchdowns as the defense pitched their first shutout of the season.

Ell-Saline will need a similar effort next week as they advance to face the undefeated Sedgewick Cardinals who handed them a 55-12 loss earlier this season.

Sacred Heart 0, Conway Springs 68

The Sacred Heart Knights 2021 campaign came to a brutal end at the hands of the Conway Springs Cardinals on Friday night.

The Knights finish their season 0-9 while Conway Springs advances to play 6-3 Plainville next week.
