Frances Louise Smith, 93, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away at 6:52 p.m., on Thursday, December 29, 2022 while in the company of family members at Pleasant View Home, Inman, Kansas.
Frances was born on October 30, 1929 in Ottawa, Kansas, a daughter of John and Elizabeth Higgins.
She attended and graduated from Ottawa High School in 1947, where she was active in sports and dramatics. She then attended and graduated with honors from Ottawa University, Ottawa, Kansas.
Frances was united in marriage to Vernon Smith March 17, 1950 and he passed away in 2012. The couple lived in several towns in Kansas before deciding to settle permanently in McPherson in 1979, when they moved from Manhattan where she was a lab technician for the U.S. Grain Research Center. Frances had worked at W-R Milling prior to returning there as their cereal chemist for nearly 19 years until she retired in 1992.
She loved being with her family, playing board games, baking, reading and watching sports – especially KU Basketball.
Frances is survived by her children, Tom Smith and wife Debbie of McPherson, Kansas, Randy Smith and wife Marla of Bonita Springs, Florida, Susan McVicker and husband Mike of McPherson, Kansas and Terry Smith and wife Kim of Kansas City, Missouri and her brother, Don Higgins and wife Sharon of Ottawa, Kansas. She is also survived by her 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on January 4, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Glidden-Ediger-Wiggins Chapel, McPherson, Kansas.
Graveside service will be held on January 4, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at McPherson Cemetery, McPherson, Kansas.
