KWU women's soccer wins, men lose at Ottawa

OTTAWA - Kansas Wesleyan women's soccer won while the men's team dropped the conference opener at Ottawa.

Kansas Wesleyan women's soccer got its first win of the season at just the right time.

A pair of goals late in the second half fueled the Coyotes to their first win of the season, in the Kansas Conference opener against the Ottawa Braves 2-1 at AdventHealth Field.

The Coyotes were on the offensive early in the match with several shots in the first 10 minutes, but the Coyotes could not find the back of the net.

The match went into the half scoreless.

Wesleyan continued to be on the offensive in the match and finally broke through in the 78th minute when Maleia Jackson (SO/Belton, Mo.) netted a ball.

Kayla Deaver (SR/Lee's Summit, Mo.) made it 2-0 Coyotes in the 84th minute with a goal off an assist by Caitlyn Carlos (SO/Yucaipa, Calif.).

Ottawa got a late goal in the 87th minute, but could not get an equalizer.

KWU outshot Ottawa 19-11 in the match, Deaver had six shots, while Yarellie Galindo (SR/Lynwood, Calif.) had three. Allison Blumenthal (JR/Temecula, Calif.) had three saves in goal.

The KWU women are back in action on Sept. 24 at Tabor.

KWU men

Steven Moya (SR/Whittier, Calif.) scored twice, but a pair of goals by Ottawa 90 seconds apart gave the Braves a 3-2 win in Friday's Kansas Conference opener for both teams at AdventHealth Field.

Moya got the Coyotes on the board early in the ninth minute with a goal, but Ottawa tied it in the 25th with a goal by Bence Molnar.

Moya did it again in the 33rd minute cleaning up a rebound save of an initial shot by Brandon Oaks (SO/Salina, Kan.).

Ottawa tied it with a goal in the 50th minute by Patrick Wyatt and 90 seconds later, the Braves scored again from Slobodan Novicevic.

Ottawa led the shots 17-11 over the Coyotes. Moya led the Coyotes with five.

The Coyotes are back in action Sept. 24 with a match at Tabor.
