A different kind of computer scam struck a business in Salina's south industrial area.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that the business' human resources person received an email she believed to be from an employee wanting to change the bank in which his paycheck was deposited. The email included all pertinent account information for the new bank.

When payday came, however, and the 61-year-old employee reported that he hadn't gotten paid, it was discovered that he also hadn't requested to switch banks, Soldan said. Instead, a scammer had spoofed the employee's email account and had the paycheck routed to an account the scammer had set up. The incident was reported to the Saline County Sheriff's Office on Monday.

Soldan said the company went ahead and paid the employee, but is out the $1,257 that went to the scammer. The company also changed its policy for change requests from employees, eliminating the use of email in such requests.
