
Jerry Gene Patterson, 81, of Wakefield, KS died on February 8, 2025, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, KS.
Born in Syracuse, KS, to Eugene and Linda (Weinman), Patterson, Zordel, Jerry was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. While leading freshman tours in college, he met the love of his life, Norma Jean (Jeannie) Boor, whom he married on September 7, 1964. Together, they built a life filled with love, raising four children: Craig Patterson, Christine (Tom) Fritzsche, Clay (Tammy) Patterson, and Kathy (Erik) Ganstrom. He cherished his 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A graduate of Hill City High School and Fort Hays State University, Jerry’s leadership qualities emerged early, as he naturally stepped into roles that found him. He dedicated 40 years to banking in Wakefield, KS, beginning as a teller and working his way up to President, CEO, and Chairman of the Board at Farmers and Merchants State Bank. He was appointed by Governor Mike Hayden to serve two terms on the Kansas State Banking Board, three years of which he was the Chairman.
Beyond his profession, Jerry was deeply committed to his community. He was passionate about the Kansas Landscape Arboretum, where he played a vital role in its leadership, promotion, and ongoing care. Jerry was an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America, earned the St. George Emblem, and lived by the principles of the Scout Law. He served with the Kansas Guardianship Program, providing conservatorships for over 25 individuals. Most recently, he served on the Catholic Foundation Board for the Salina Diocese.
Jerry’s gift for storytelling brought family history and tall tales to life in his writing. An avid outdoorsman, he found joy in nature and cherished every opportunity to share his love for hunting, fishing, and adventure with his grandchildren. His wonderful sense of humor filled our lives with laughter, bringing warmth and joy to every gathering. Known for his strong faith, generosity, and quick wit, he left a lasting legacy of love, wisdom, and devotion to his family.Visitation will be heldfrom 3-6 PM on Thursday February 13, 2025, at Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home.
