Workforce housing among county agenda items for Tuesday

A variety of items are on the Saline County Commission agenda for Tuesday.

About the meeting

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday in room 107 of the City-County Building, 300 West Ash Street. A time for public comment is scheduled near the beginning of the meeting.

County Commission meetings are now available by several options. The Board of County Commissioners encourage citizen participation in local governance processes. Making every effort to be in compliance with the Kansas Open Meetings Act (KSA 75-4317). Everyone is invited to participate in meetings. Speakers are requested to state their full name and address before delivering remarks. Please approach the podium and use the microphone. Comments are limited to three minutes.

Agenda items

Commissioners are scheduled to consider a request to proclaim Sexual Assault Awareness Month in the county. Sheila Beeson, sexual assault advocate for DVACK is scheduled to read the proclamation.

Additionally, commissioners are scheduled to discuss with County Administrator Phillip Smith-Hanes the county's role in supporting workforce housing development. According to information in the commission meeting packet, "the community's recent economic development successes associated with 1Vision Aviation, Schwan's, and Kubota have placed a heightened emphasis on the need for workforce housing."

The City of Salina is in the process of updating its housing study, and city staff is fielding "multiple inquiries from from possible developers with varying levels of interest," the meeting packet information noted.

City staff also is compiling a list of available vacant land within the community. According to the meeting packet information, City Manager Mike Schrage recently contacted Smith-Hanes "to inquire about whether County property adjacent to Ohio and Schilling is still intended for future Expo Center development or whether it might be available for housing development." Additionally, the city also has contacted USD 305 about vacant school property.

Other items on the county agenda for Tuesday include the following.

●Consider a bid award for bituminous chip sealing -- Justin Mader, county engineer

●Consider a request for tape library replacement -- Brad Bowers, computer technology director

●Consider an insurance broker agreement -- Hannah Stambaugh, deputy county administrator
