It came down to the final two matches on the court for the Kansas Wesleyan men's tennis team. With the No. 5 and No. 6 flights the last to take the court, KWU needed one of the two to win to earn the win in the match.
The Coyotes got just that. Caleb Carter (JR/Oklahoma City, Okla.) beat Gabe DeLeo 10-3 in a third set tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets 6-3 each, to seal Friday night's 4-3 win for the Coyotes over Morningside at Genesis Health Club.
Morningside took the early lead in the match, winning the doubles point by taking two of three matches.
Wes Robertson (FR/Edmond, Okla.) and Kyle Rice (JR/Topeka, Kan.) beat Jaime Maza and Jory Opp 6-3 for KWU's only doubles win. Winyou Asavaruangchai and DeLeo beat Shingi Chingaya (JR/Wylie, Texas) and Rodrigo Vera (JR/Lima, Peru) 6-4; and Jay'Von McKinney and Garrett Seamans beat Brandon Sherman (FR/Overland Park, Kan.) and Carter 6-3 in the other two matches.
In singles, Robertson picked up a big win at No.1 over Maza 6-3, 6-4. Vera beat Opp 6-1, 6-2; and Rice beat Seamans 7-5, 6-2 along with Carter's win.
Asavaruangchai beat Chingaya 6-3, 6-4; and McKinney won in a third set tiebreaker over Sherman 6-2, 2-6, 10-5 for Morningside.
The Coyotes are off until next Saturday, hosting Hastings at Genesis starting at noon.
