
CONCORDIA -- Cloud County Community College men's basketball sophomore forward David Acosta would be named Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference East Division Defensive Player of the Year while forward Ibrahim Drame and guards Savian Edwards and Zavien Smith have been named All-Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Honorable Mention East Division for their performances throughout the 2020-21 basketball season.
The awards, which were announced on Thursday afternoon, come for the four CCCC players as 21 players would make up the All-KJCCC East Division First-Team, Second-Team, and Honorable Mention accolades in addition to the Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year, and Defensive Player of the Year Awards.
A difference maker all season for Cloud County, Acosta would lead the KJCCC in blocks with 2.6 blocks per contest while also averaging 8.1 points and 7.8 rebounds per contest. Appearing in 20 games and making 18 starts, Acosta would score a career-best 25 points in 19 minutes of action in the regular-season finale at Cowley Community College while also recording career-highs of 13 rebounds against Neosho Community College and seven blocks against Coffeyville Community College. The 2.6 blocks per game would rank 12th among all NJCAA Division I basketball players while his 52 total blocks would rank 15th in the country.
One of just two players for CCCC to appear in all 22 games this past season, Drame would make four starts during his freshmen campaign and average 11.0 points and 5.3 rebounds per contest. Scoring a career-high 23 points in a loss to Independence Community College on March 3rd, Drame would also have a season-best 12 rebounds in a loss to Cowley Community College on March 13th. For the season, Drame would record five double-doubles which included a span of four double-doubles in a five-game stretch.
Edwards would make an appearance in 21 of Cloud County's 22 games this past season while making 15 starts on his way to averaging 11.4 points per game and 2.7 assists per contest. Reaching double-figures in nine games, Edwards would score a career-high 24 points in a double-overtime loss to nationally-ranked Coffeyville Community College just two nights after setting a previous career-high with 23 in an overtime road loss to Butler. The Topeka native would also record career-highs of seven rebounds on two different occasions and six assists in a road win at Allen on March 29.
Smith would also start 15 games for CCCC and make a total of 20 appearances during the 2020-21 campaign as the Orlando, Florida native would average 12.2 points and 4.4 assists per game. The 4.4 assists would rank ninth among KJCCC players this season while the 12.2 points ranked 34th. Recording double-doubles against Dodge City on Feb. 3 and a week later on Feb. 10 against Pratt, Smith would set a career-high in points with 25 in the season finale in the NJCAA Region VI Tournament opening round at Barton while setting highs in rebounds (10) against Pratt and assists (10) against Dodge City.
