Rec area renaming, vehicle replacement, executive session on city agenda

The renaming of the East Crawford Recreation Area, replacement of police and fire vehicles, two proclamations, and an executive session are among the items on the Salina City Commission agenda for Monday.

Commissioners are scheduled to begin with a 3 p.m. tour of the Lee Buildings apartment complex on the southeast corner of North Santa Fe Avenue and East Elm Street. The tour will serve as the commission's usual study session prior to the regular commission meeting.

The regular commission meeting is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. in room 107 of the City-County Building, 300 West Ash Street. A time for public comment is scheduled near the beginning of the meeting.

Commissioners will consider two requests for proclamations. They are as follows.

●Proclaim September 2020 as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

●Proclaim Sept. 15-Oct. 15 as Hispanic Heritage Month

Commissioners also are scheduled to conduct a public hearing on the proposed renaming of the East Crawford Recreation Area as the "Berkley Family Recreation Area." According to information in the commission meeting packet for Monday, the Berkley Family is securing the naming rights to the recreation area in the amount of $650,000. The money would be used toward the renovation of Dean Evans Stadium. Baseball Enterprises has secured a total of $1.8 million toward renovation of the stadium, the meeting packet information noted.

Additionally, commissioners are scheduled to consider replacing a Salina Fire Department vehicle and a Salina Police Department patrol vehicle that were involved in a wreck in June. According to meeting packet information, the city has negotiated a settlement with its insurance carrier for both vehicles.

Other items on the city agenda for Monday include the following.

●Consider a resolution authorizing the mayor to execute an amended and restated loan agreement with Community Housing Development Corporation of Central Kansas relating to a loan agreement entered into with Lee Loft Partners, LLC, in the principal amount of $500,000.

●Consider authorizing the city manager to authorize the Stinson law firm as environmental legal counsel to the Salina Public Entities in relation to the former Schilling Air Force Base environmental matter.

●An executive session "to discuss with legal counsel the subject of legal considerations relating to the potential engagement by the law firm of Clark, Mize & Linville, as the city's legal counsel, of a confidential, privileged expert in the course of providing legal advice to the city regarding a personnel matter under the city manager's purview" with possible action to follow.
