
Kansas Wesleyan dropped a pair of men's tennis matches over the weekend, to the Bethany Swedes 4-3 and to Baker 6-1.
The loss to Bethany came down to the final match on the court, which went three full sets, with the first two going tiebreakers at No. 5 singles between Caleb Carter (JR/Oklahoma City, Okla.) and Andrew Witter. Carter claimed the first set 7-6 in a tiebreaker, but Witter won the second set also in a tiebreak to force a third. The match went down to the wire as Witter was able to get the win 7-5 in the third.
The Coyotes did get wins in three singles matches as the teams split singles, but Bethany would pick up the all-important doubles point by winning all three doubles matches, all by the same 6-4 score.
In singles at No. 3, Shingi Chingaya (JR/Wylie, Texas) beat Franco Hernandez Colman 7-6, 6-0; at No. 4 Kyle Ride beat Matt Lucas in straight sets 6-3, 6-2; and Eli Truhe (JR/Salina, Kan.) beat Gavin Pastine 6-1, 6-1. Bethany got wins at No. 1 as Raul Rivero Eggers beat Wes Robertson (FR/Edmond, Okla.) 6-1, 6-3; Kurt Bruckner Suarez beat Rodrigo Vera (JR/Lima, Peru) 6-3, 6-0; and the No. 5 flight win.
In doubles, Rivero Eggers and Bruckner Suarez beat Vera and Robertson; Hernandez Colman and Witter beat Chingaya and Rice; and Lucas and Timothy Yoder beat Truhe and Carter 6-4.
Against Baker, the Coyotes fell 6-1.
The Wildcats claimed victories over the Coyotes in all three doubles flights and won five of six singles flights.
Brandon Sherman (FR/Overland Park, Kan.) got the lone win for the Coyotes at No. 6 singles, beating Davis Steadman 7-6, 1-6, 10-5.
In the other singles matches, Alejandro Hernandez beat Rodrigo Vera 6-0, 6-0; Marcus Elsey beat Shingi Chingaya 6-2, 6-0; Carson Fitzgerald beat Kyle Rice (JR/Topeka, Kan.) 6-2, 6-2; Adam Ruckman beat Eli Truhe 6-3, 6-0; and Max Havorka beat Caleb Carter 6-1, 7-5.
In doubles Hernandez and Elsey beat Chingaya and Rice 6-1; Fitzgerald and Ruckman beat Truhe and Vera 6-2; and Havorka and Steadman beat Carter and Sherman 6-2.
Wesleyan will wrap up its 2020-21 season on Saturday hosting McPherson at 11 a.m. at the Salina Country Club.
