James Dexter “Jim” Yost, age 74, died on January 21, 2022, at his home in Salina, Kansas.
Jim is survived by his wife Lois (Westbrook), son Jonathan (Beth) and their children Wyatt and Luke of Salina, and his brother Dennis Yost of Pueblo, CO. In addition, Jim is survived by his stepchildren Keith (Lisa) Joy of Hays, KS, Daren (Jaque) Joy of Hays, Jamie Joy of Hays, Todd (Janice) Joy of Colorado Springs, CO, and many stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.
Jim was born on March 14, 1947, in Great Bend, KS, to Paul and Jeannette Beverly (Jean) Yost. Jim enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1967. He was stationed in San Diego and served aboard the USS Enterprise. Jim reenlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1975 and was stationed in San Diego. Between enlistments, Jim attended Fort Hays State University.
Jim married Lois Westbrook in 1974 in Nederland, CO. Their son Jonathan was born in 1979. When Jonathan was 13 days old, Jim and Lois took a cross country trip on a “hippy bus” and found their way to Fort Collins, CO, and stayed for the next four years. While in Fort Collins, Jim worked for the Colorado Forest Service. Jim, Lois and Jonathan moved to Hoisington, KS where Jim worked for the railroad. Jim and his family moved to Salina in 1997 when the railroad moved everyone to Salina. Jim worked for the railroad for 30 years and retired in 2010.
Jim liked to tinker in his garden, flirt with the girls at Dillons, take care of the plants at his church, and above all, playing with his grandsons, Wyatt and Luke. Jim was a spiritual man and involved in church activities. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
A funeral service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 29, 2022, at Ray Avenue Baptist Church, 2801 Ray Ave. A reception at the church will follow the service. Memorials can be made in care of the church.
