SALINA, KAN. - "Public. 100-percent. We had a witness come over, say, hey he's right over here. So, see something, say something."
Lt. Andrew Zeigler with Salina P.D. says they were on a call about a car being broken into in the 700 block of west Schilling this week, when they witnessed a man using a pitchfork to try and break into cars.

"We were called out there to the Casey's at 725 West Schilling," said Salina police Lt. Andrew Zeigler. "And a patron inside the Casey's saw someone in his vehicle in the parking lot."
"So he goes out, that person starts to back his vehicle up. And it was a 95 Ford Ranger. He stops that person, he is able to stop that person in his vehicle. Reaches into it and turns the vehicle off. Then the guy gets out and takes off."
"Calls the police, we show up. Kind of get the story. As we are doing that, as we are collecting the facts of the story, we're contacted by another witness who says, hey, there's a guy in the parking lot over here next door breaking into cars. Currently."
"So officers respond. They view him attempting to break into two more vehicles with a pitchfork. He is hitting the windows with this pitchfork."
"So we intervene, we go to arrest. He resists arrest. In that fracas, if you will, he headbutts an officer. That officer is ok. No injuries. But he is then arrested."

""The individual they arrested - Hanway, John. He's 41. Male and he is from North Carolina. Charged one count felony theft, criminal damage to property. Battery on a law enforcement officer."
No injuries reported other than an officer being headbutted.
"Again," said Zeigler, "see something, say something."
