Posted Dec 08, 2021 12:47 PM

Van Gogh's Sunflowers will be the focus of the upcoming discussion series at the Salina Art Center Cinema.

SAC Salon Discussion Series will present Sunflowers, a film from Exhibition on Screen, Thursday beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The Salon Discussion Series is an exciting way to see some of the world’s most mesmerizing art exhibitions without ever leaving Salina.

Exhibition on Screen: Sunflowers, works closely with the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, to go beyond a ‘virtual exhibition.’ Delving into the rich and complex stories behind each of the paintings to unveil the mysteries of the sunflowers. What did the flowers mean to Van Gogh, and why do they resonate so much with audiences today? With a striking portrayal of the artist by actor Jamie de Courcey and fascinating insights from art historians, botanists and everything in between, the film offers a unique insight into Van Gogh’s life and artwork.

Following the film speaker, Jason Graves, horticulturist and horticulture extension agent for Central Kansas District, will discuss how Sunflowers are a unique part of our ecosystem in Kansas. An essential role in supporting wildlife and pollinators - a ‘food hub’ plant builds life around us on and off the canvas. A beautiful still-life painted over decades holds more than just a reference image - a flower that is great for our ecosystem and brings science into art.

This discussion is in-person and will not have a Zoom option.  To see the full season schedule, visit www.salinaartcenter.org/salon-discussion-series. Regular ticket prices still apply and film discussions are $5 per person and begin immediately following the film at 7 p.m. The Salon Discussion Series is funded by a 2021 Kansas Museums Association (KMA) Institutional Project Grant.
