Kay Devon Vowels, age 77, passed away on July 26 in Chapman, Kansas, with her daughter, Sheila, by her side. During the last year of her life, Kay courageously faced cancer and Parkinson’s disease.
Kay was born in Manhattan, Kansas, on January 11, 1949, to Garret and Mary Alice Frauenfelder. She graduated from DCCHS/Chapman High School in 1967, attended the University of Kansas to study art education, and later graduated from Clark School of Business with training in financial management.
Kay worked at ADM Alliance Nutrition in Abilene for 38 years.
Kay was active in Girl Scouts throughout her life. As a teenager, she earned the Gold Award. As an adult, she served on the Board of Directors of the Central Kansas Council and became a certified lifetime member.
She was also a member of the Red Hat Society, where she embraced the tradition of wearing purple and a red hat as a sign of independence, humor, and a love of life.
Faith was important to Kay, and Community Bible Church played a meaningful role in her life. She also loved sports and played softball both in her youth and as an adult, forming lifelong friendships along the way.
Kay is survived by her daughter, Sheila Luther (Keith); her grandson, Tyler Gebar (Kim); and her sisters, Jane Butterfield (Ed) and Jo Osbourn (Jerry). She was preceded in death by her parents and two grandsons, Garret Provance and Daniel Gebar.
A funeral service will be held at Community Bible Church in Abilene, Kansas, on Saturday, August 8, at 1:00 p.m. A light lunch will follow the service, providing time for friends and family to gather and share memories.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Community Bible Church or to Home Health and Hospice of Dickinson County.
