GREAT BEND – Kansas Wesleyan's effort to rally from a 3-run deficit came up just short as the Coyotes fell to the Avila Eagles on Saturday in the KCAC Tournament at the Great Bend Sports Complex.
The loss ends Wesleyan's season at 22-22 overall after KWU went 1-2 in the KCAC Tournament.
Wesleyan trailed 3-0 after an inning when Avila scored three times in the bottom of the first inning.
The Coyotes put together a rally in the top of the fourth inning. Bailey Rivas (SO/West Covina, Calif.) led off the inning with a single, followed by a hit by Mia Hernandez (FR/Hanford, Calif.). Samantha Herrera (FR/Lake Jackson, Texas) reached on a fielder's choice, followed by Carmen Angulo (SR/Long Beach, Calif.) driving in the first run of the inning with a single to center field.
Destiny Hackney (FR/Thornton, Colo.) drove in the second run of the frame for the Coyotes with a single that scored pinch-runner Emma Schumacher (FR/Winfield, Kan.).
The Coyotes had a chance to tie it in the top of the fifth as Herrera reached on an error and Angulo followed with a single, but the Coyotes couldn't push a run across.
The Coyotes outhit Avila 5-4 in the game. Angulo had two hits while Rivas, Hernandez and Hackney all had a hit as well. Angulo took the loss in the circle allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits with four strikeouts.
