The Southeast of Saline Trojan basketball team will look to avenge an earlier loss to Sacred Heart tonight when they host the 6-3 Knights at 7:30.

The Trojans have been playing their best basketball as of late winning six of their last seven and looking for their fourth straight tonight.

Sacred Heart won the first meeting by a final score of 51-49, but both teams have come a long way since then.

“I thought we were sluggish early on in the first meeting with them,” SES head coach Bryson Flax said. “A lot of our key pieces didn’t get touches throughout that game but we’re a way different team now than we were in December.”

The Knights have also hit their stride, but due to covid-19 cancellations played just four games in the month of January.

Sacred Heart is led by a small but formidable core of players, featuring breakout big man Alex Disberger, senior point guard Caleb Gilliland, and big scoring threats in Mason Richards and Jacob Gormley.

“They haven’t been playing that many guys this year so it’s key for us to set the tone and get settled in early,” Flax said. “We’ve gotta be good defensively because they can do some good things from a lot of different spots.”

While the rivalry between these two schools normally dominates the headlines, and while this game could have major league implications, Coach Flax and his crew aren’t letting those things be the focus of this game.

“A league championship would be great but that’s not the goal. We’re focused on trying to win our sub-state and this needs to be just another game for us.”

Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 immediately following the girls game from Southeast of Saline High School. Both games can be heard on KINA (910 AM or 107.5 FM).
