Life Sketch Taken from the Funeral Bulletin
Ernest J. Dirks, 90, passed away March 16, 2023 at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro. He was born August 17, 1932 in Newton to P.D. and Louise (Wedel) Dirks. He grew up on a farm near Moundridge. He received Christ as his Savior at an early age, and did his best to live his life for Jesus.
One day while driving around the countryside with friends, he saw some girls playing croquet in the front yard of a farm near Inman, and was particularly intrigued by one of them. He followed up to meet her, and find out she was Betty Kornelsen. After courting for some time, they got married on June 12, 1953.
They then moved to Denver, Colorado, where Ernie served his 1W service for our nation.
After his service, he started his own appliance repair business, and his three children, Sheryl, Roger, and Norman were born during his time in Denver.
In 1963 Ernie and Betty moved back to Kansas with their three children and settled in Hillsboro, where he restarted his appliance repair business. He did take up employment with various companies over the years. The longest lasting job was at Hesston Corp., which he retired from after many years there.
When their health was declining, Ernie and Betty moved to a condominium and sold the house they had lived in for many years. While living in the condo, Betty's health continued to decline and she was moved to Parkside Homes in Hillsboro, where Betty predeceased him. Ernie then moved to Parkside as well where he then met up with Joyce Black, and they fell in love and cared deeply for each other until Ernie's passing on March 16, 2023.
Survivors include: wife Joyce Black of Hillsboro, sons Norman Dirks of Hillsboro, Roger (Susan) Dirks of Wichita; sister Alice Fast of Andover; 9 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Predeceased by his first wife Betty Dirks in 2017 and daughter Sheryl Jones in 2001.
