The Southeast of Saline Lady Trojans basketball team picked right up where they left off in 2020, bursting into the new year with a 55-30 win over the Minneapolis Lions.

With this win SES is back to .500 on the year while Minneapolis falls to 2-5.

Southeast was led by a massive first half by junior Karsyn Schlesener, who put up 22 in just the first half, putting the Trojans up 35-11 heading into the break.

While Schlesener was the only player in double digits tonight, SES showed off their depth, with nine different girls finding the scoresheet.

Offensively, the Southeast did a much better job stringing out possessions and finding better shots.

“We wanted to be on offense more this year,” SES head coach Shauna Smith said. “We spent a lot of time taking quick good shots and we want to be taking great shots instead.”

While the Trojans depth was on full display, the lack thereof for Minneapolis was prevalent tonight, as Southeast allowed just three players to score.

“We talked all week about not hand checking, keeping things in front of us and making them work their tails off trying to get through our press,” Smith said.

While the pressure for SES was good, the pace of play was even better, dictated by the Trojans from start to finish. While many teams struggled with stamina in the first game back from the break, Southeast thrived on a quick tempo.

“We had a really good practice yesterday,” she said. “Conditioning was our main focus, we knew we were going to need to play full court and we were able to keep the pace up.”

The Lady Trojans will be back in action next Tuesday when they travel to Clay Center to take on the Tigers, who entered tonight 3-0.
