Salina Animal Services announced last week that it has reached full capacity.

The facility, 329 North Second Street, serves as the primary animal shelter for the area, is currently unable to accept new animals until further notice.

The summer months typically see an increase in the number of stray and surrendered pets, and this year is no exception.

"It ebbs and flows. It's not uncommon for us to be at capacity, but it just depends on the timing and when animals come in," said Deputy City Manager Jacob Wood.

Wood said the shelter currently has 64 dogs in its care, with 28 classified as "pit bull type" dogs.

Pit Bull is not a classified breed of dog. “Pit Bull” is an umbrella term commonly reported to contain the following three registered breeds of dogs: Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, and American Pit Bull Terrier.
