Pursuit through part of city results in Salina man's arrest

A Salina driver allegedly took out part of a fence and struck a local pizza establishment during a pursuit through the city early Sunday morning.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that at approximately 2 a.m. Sunday, a deputy saw a white 2014 Chrysler 300 with no lights on turn onto S. Broadway Boulevard in the 100 block. The deputy attempted to stop the car, but it sped off and a pursuit ensued. According to Soldan, the pursuit took the following route.

●East on W. Walnut Street

●South on S. Clark Street

●East on Spruce Street

●South on Baker Street

●East on W. South Street

At the South Street intersection with S. Santa Fe Avenue, the car turned wide, went over the curb, and took out part of the fence at the Salina Surgical Hospital, 401 S. Santa Fe Avenue, Soldan said.

The car then continued south on S. Santa Fe until it attempted to turn onto W. Minneapolis Avenue and struck the Pizza Hut building, Soldan said.

The driver, identified as Joel Shuler, 37, of Salina, was arrested on the following requested charges, Soldan said.

●Exhibition/acceleration

●Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol

●Flee and elude

●Driver's license restriction violation

●Reckless driving

●Disobeying a traffic control device

●Improper driving on laned roadways

●Driving left of center

●Driving without lights

●Improper passing of a vehicle going in the same direction

●Improper turn

●Unsafe speed
