🏀 Lady Trojans hold off Caney Valley in sub-state semifinals

The Southeast of Saline girls’ basketball team continued to roll on Wednesday night, eliminating Caney Valley 51-43 in Gypsum and advancing to the sub-state championship game.

This was a high-scoring game from the jump, with the Lady Trojans outpacing the Bullpups 22-17 in the first quarter, and matching pace in the second to take a 36-30 lead into the locker room.

Both teams continued to score at a high rate in the third, with Southeast holding a 51-43 lead after three, before both offenses ground to a halt in a fourth quarter that saw just four total points split evenly between the two.

The Lady Trojans handled their business at the free-throw line, converting 11 of their 14 tries from the stripe, while also taking care of the ball, committing just ten turnovers while forcing 15 from the Bullpups.

Abigail Pearson (13) and Reagan Duran (12) led the way for SES offensively on a night where seven different Lady Trojans scored.

Molleigh Kaminska and Elyn Washburn each scored 14 for Caney Valley, but got just 15 points of total support from the rest of the roster in the loss.

For Caney Valley, the season comes to a close at 16-9 while for Southeast, now 18-5 it continues with a battle against an old foe.

The Lady Trojans will battle Hesston at 5:00 on the campus of Haven High School for a ticket to the 3A state tournament on Saturday.
