If you're planning to go out to ring in the new year, you might want to pay attention to the weather.
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita has already put the following counties in our area under a winter storm watch for Thursday evening through Friday afternoon.
Marion County
McPherson County
Saline County
According to NWS, "a vigorous storm system will move out of Mexico and into the Southern Plains on New Year's Eve. This storm system will bring a wintry mix of rain, freezing rain, sleet and accumulating snow to the area on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day."
Heavy mixed precipitation possible. Total snow accumulations of several inches and ice accumulations of around one tenth to a quarter of an inch are possible, NWS noted.
Precipitation will begin as freezing rain and sleet before changing to snow across much of central and portions of south central Kansas Thursday night and early Friday, NWS reported.
Plan on slippery road conditions.
