The Americans fell in four sets to Brazil.
They likely will need to win their final pool play match against Argentina to avoid being eliminated before the quarterfinals for the first time since the 2000 Games in Sydney.
Brazil rallied after losing the first set 32-30 to win the next three and improve to 3-1 at the Olympics.
