Overcoming adversity with resilience and courage is a lesson applicable to both sports and religion. It is also the theme of a talk, ā€œUnbreakable Spirit,ā€ by Marcellus Casey, chaplain of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Casey will give the talk at 6 p.m. April 23 in Mabee Arena on the Kansas Wesleyan University campus. The talk is sponsored by the KWU Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). Casey will also visit with KWU-specific groups earlier in the day.

Casey has been involved in sports ministry for more than 17 years, playing football and serving as a sports chaplain at Northwest Missouri State University, where he earned his bachelorā€™s degree in public relations. His father pastored an inner-city church and also served as a chaplain to Olympic and professional athletes.

Casey worked with FCA for 11 years and was director of Greater Kansas City. He has been chaplain of the KC Chiefs for almost seven years and is executive director of Championship Greatness in Kansas City, spiritual leadership for athletes.

ā€œUnbreakable Spirit: Overcoming Adversity with Resilience and Courageā€ will be free and open to all community members.

More about Marcellus

Growing up with a father who pastored an inner-city church and who worked as a chaplain to Olympic and professional athletes gave Marcellus an inside look into sports ministry life. Having a mother who is a lifetime educator gave Marcellus a picture of what it means to slow down and care for others.

Marcellus now has over 17 years of experience in sports ministry. Alter playing football and serving as a sports chaplain at Northwest Missouri State University, Marcellus mamed his high school sweetheart, Stephanie.

He then served as the chaplain for the University of Illinois football and basketball teams through the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (F.C.A.) before moving to Kansas City to serve as F.C.A.'s Director for the states of Kansas and Missouri.

Marcellus is currently serving in his 6th season as the chaplain for the Kansas City Chiefs. Marcellus and Stephanie recently celebrated 17 years of marriage, and they have three beautiful daughters (Salem, Cora, Vivi) and one handsome son (Ralphie).
