MANHATTAN – K-State soccer head coach Mike Dibbini has hired Don Trentham as the program’s associate head coach.

Trentham fills the role previously held by Gabe Romo, who accepted an assistant coach position at Michigan State.

“Don brings a wealth of coaching experience and will be a huge asset to our program,” stated Dibbini. “His knowledge and coaching skill sets will allow us to keep growing and bring new ideas to a team that has been on the rise. His main roles will be coaching the team defense and taking on the recruiting coordinator role as he has done at his previous institutions. We are looking forward to collaborating and using new ideas to help take the program to new heights.”

Trentham’s on-field coaching duties include working with K-State’s defense.

In addition to his coaching duties, Trentham’s responsibilities include: practice preparation and development for the team’s defense, organization and arrangement of the team’s game schedule, recruiting coordination of unofficial and official visits and recruiting evaluation.

Before moving to the Little Apple, Trentham served six seasons as a member of the Missouri coaching staff in 2020, serving as the associate head coach.

Trentham, a native of O’Fallon, Missouri, and a 1999 graduate of Columbia College, primarily worked with the Tiger defense – a unit that thrived under his tutelage.

In his first season at Mizzou in 2015, the Tigers set a school record with only 17 goals allowed on the season. The Mizzou backline held opponents to fewer than 10 shots a game, with only 39.2-percent being on goal. The Tigers allowed only 10 goals in 11 SEC games.

Despite playing one of the nation’s toughest schedules in 2018, Mizzou posted five shutouts on the year – three in SEC play. Starting goalkeeper Kelsey Dossey ended her career by earning 2018 All-SEC Second Team honors

In 2017, Mizzou posted three shutouts, and the program won its first SEC Tournament game since 2012 with a 3-1 win over Alabama in the first round.

Mizzou reached the NCAA Tournament in 2016, Trentham’s second season on staff. The Tigers posted three shutouts on the season while going 11-7-2 (6-4-1). Midfielder/defender Lauren Seldain was also named to the 2016 All-SEC Second Team.

Prior to returning to Missouri, Trentham spent three seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Colorado. With the Buffaloes, he helped the program post a record of 36-22-7 and two-straight NCAA Tournament berths during that span.

Trentham spent one season as an assistant at Wyoming in 2011, helping the Cowgirls to a 12-5-4 record and the program’s first-ever spot in the Mountain West Conference Tournament championship game.

Before his move up the ladder to NCAA Division I, Trentham enjoyed a nine-year stint (2002-10) as the head coach at Montana State-Billings.

At the time of his assignment, Montana State-Billings had never enjoyed a winning season. When he departed, Trentham had guided the program to an 85-75-10 record and the program’s first NCAA Division II Tournament appearance. In 2010, Trentham was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.

Trentham holds a USSF National Goalkeeping license, a NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and a USSF “A” license.

Trentham earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Columbia College in 1999 and a master’s degree in education in health and physical education from East Stroudsburg in 2007. He and his wife, the former Jennifer Lawler, have two children, Landon and Adelyn.

K-State returns 18 letter winners and 85 percent of the goal scorers from 2020 including 2021 All-America candidate Brookelynn Entz, who was a 2020 MAC Hermann Trophy candidate and a 2020 All-Big 12 First Team selection. The Wildcats also welcome in 14 newcomers for the 2021 season.
